Natural systems tend towards following the path of least resistance (water flow, electric current flow) and also towards achieving the lowest level of potential energy. Life is a struggle against both of these driving forces of the universe. Life does not have the luxury of seeking out multiple paths simultaneously, for the majority of them lead to death.
